La Tatacoita Desert (Checua)
In Nemocón, in the hamlet of Checua there is a dry sub-tropical forest with extraordinary landscapes formed by millennia of wind and rain erosion. This singular place provides the opportunity to see the wonderfully unusual shapes formed by Mother Nature out of rock and stone, whilst walking between bluffs and through caverns. It must be noted that archaeologists have found remains here from some of the oldest human settlements on the planet, although these are not on display in La Tatacoita.
Nemocón Municipality
Nemocón is located in the Central Savannah Province, at the high point of the source of the River Bogota. In the Pre-Colombian period, this area was inhabited by the Nemza people, part of the wider nationality of the Muisca Confederation. From time immemorial, the indigenous of this area have exploited the salt mines to be found all around this town, as well as inhabiting this area known as the Desert of Checua.
🥾 We will embark on an easy-level hike; however, we recommend wearing shoes that can get muddy, boots, or footwear with good grip soles that protect the ankles. Avoid using Converse-style sneakers or ballet flats. Avoid wearing new shoes on these outings.
